Union members in both Ohio and Pennsylvania voted in favor of various new agreements and extensions of existing agreements at a variety of Local 19's shops during the final months of 2007. In Pittsburgh, new contracts were finalized at both Cellone Bakery and the Mallet Oil Company. Highlighting the Cellone contract were wage improvements of more than $1.00 per hour, the addition of a 6th week of vacation and a $100 per month pension level increase. At Mallet Oil, members received a $500 signing bonus and over $2.00 per hour in wage increases over the life of the agreement in addition to a $100 per month increase in pension. Both companies also began contributing to the Local 19 C.E.R. Fund. In Cleveland, Local 19 members at Orlando Bakery ratified a settlement that maintained both Health and Welfare and Pension benefits and included a $1,000 signing bonus and more than $200 in back pay in addition to 75¢ per hour in wage increases. At Rold Gold Foods in Canton, Ohio workers supported a new deal with improved contract language, increased tool allowance and $2.00 an hour in wage increases with more than $500 in back pay. Besides normal contract renewals, five separate five year extension agreements were negotiated, voted and ratified at 2 plants and more than 30 thrift stores and docks in both Ohio and Pennsylvania by Local 19 members at Interstate Brands Corporation in an effort to help facilitate the company's reorganization and hopeful emergence from bankruptcy.
Dannon Yogurt Workers Organized by the BCTGM
Minster, Ohio - An overwhelming majority of more than 300 workers at the Dannon Yogurt plant voted for Union representation with the BCTGM. The National Labor Relations Board election that was conducted on December 5th & 6th marked the conclusion of a successful organizing campaign that began in early January. BCTGM International Representative John Price spear headed the organizing drive along with the help of other International Representatives, Joe Sardina, Mike Konesko and Anthony Shelton. As soon as the campaign began to take off and workers support began to increase, Local 19 was called upon for its assistance. Business Agents Abe Herskovitz, Mike Galassi and Bob Mitcheal quickly became involved with the organizing drive which was now gaining support through the BCTGM's affiliation with other global Union's in Europe and Asia that represent Dannon workers. The victory in December and overall success of the campaign was the product of a lot of hard work by the organizers and a great show of solidarity by Dannon workers. Thanks to our International Union, the Dannon plant will be represented by Local 19 and negotiations for a new first contract will soon be underway. We congratulate our International Representatives and everyone else who helped make this campaign a success and we salute the Dannon workers for sticking together in an effort to improve their future and the futures of their families. |
